Did you know?

  • Avocado has the highest amount of protein as compared to any other fruit - about 2g in a 115g serving. Almost 85% of avocado is monounsaturated fat which does not contribute to increased blood cholesterol levels.
  • Low levels of calcium can produce a greater risk of hypertension. Calcium levels can be enhanced by including figs and broccoli in your diet.
  • Chocolates are known as mood enhancers. Dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than milk chocolates. Antioxidants are known to fight cancer when taken in moderation.
  • Raisins have very high calories. In order to produce 500g of raisins one requires 2kg of grapes.
  • It is a myth that spinach is a good source of iron. However, it contains many valuable nutrients such as carotenoids (which help alleviate macular degeneration known to cause blindness), Vitamin A and folate (an important nutrient for those planning pregnancy).

Meal deal

  • Never skip breakfast. Have at least a few dried fruits as soon as you wake up in the morning. This enhances metabolism and is particularly important for people who want to lose weight.
  • Listen to music when cooking or eating. It alleviates stress by raising the endorphin levels and can arguably result in tastier preparations!
  • Increase the nutritional value of your meal by adding raw vegetables and fruits to your diet.
  • It is believed that frequent and smaller portions have greater health benefits as compared to heavy meals. Substitute the extra roti or rice in your meal with a salad, raita, buttermilk or soup.
  • While baking a cake, cover the sides of the tin with a wet cloth so that the edge doesn’t harden.
  • Substitute processed salad dressings with mashed avocado or yogurt. Similarly, substitute butter with olive oil when preparing garlic bread or bruschetta.

Dadi ke nuskey

  • Generally, cold milk works wonders in quelling acidity.
  • In case of overeating, have a handful of roasted carom (ajwain) or a glass of ginger and mint tea or green tea.
  • In case of diarrhoea, try making an apple stew with a sprinkling of cinnamon and/or cardamom on it. Pomegranate juice with a little bit of the skin ground into it is also effective.
  • A spoonful of ginger juice with a sprinkling of pepper is effective in curbing indigestion.
